This book about corrosion brings out the essential science behind corrosion, its forms and controlling them. The corrosion process is explained in both thermodynamic and kinetic terms. The corrosion current which determines the rate of corrosion is explained by various polarization factors. The determination of corrosion current by Tafel polarization curves and by the mixed potential theory are explained in detail. The passivation phenomenon which controls corrosion naturally has also been discussed. Different forms of corrosion including oxidation corrosion, high-temperature corrosion, stray current corrosion and microbiologically induced corrosion have been explained in detail with relevant principles, mechanisms, control and prevention. The effect of various environments on the corrosion of metals with measures to combat them is explained in a separate chapter. For evaluating corrosion quantitatively and qualitatively there are separate chapters for analysis, measurement, testing and monitoring. In the chapters on corrosion prevention and protection, factors to be considered during the design and materials selection are detailed in two chapters. Corrosion protection techniques like coatings, and anodic and cathodic protection are described in separate chapters. The role and mechanism of inhibitors in managing corrosion have also been explained separately.
